This lesson will be taught during Black History Month. There are many African American composers that have contributed to American music throughout the years. African American music started in the time of slavery and continues to impact American music today. The standards for music that I will be addressing are: 9.2.5.A Explain the historical, cultural, and social context of an individual work in the arts. 9.2.5. G Relate works of art to geographic regions: North America. This lesson allows the students to not only learn about African American musicians and composers but they also get a chance to hear music that they have written and/or performed and reflect on what they hear.
